研究領域 (Research Area)
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has identified the enhancement of English learning motivation as a key challenge in contemporary English education. Despite the increasing importance of English proficiency, the English Proficiency Index among Japanese individuals aged 18 to 25 has shown a marked decline over the past decade. One contributing factor is the decrease in learning motivation following university enrollment. My research draws on the L2 Motivational Self System (Dörnyei, 2005), a widely adopted theoretical framework in second language acquisition research. This model posits that motivation arises from the discrepancy between learners’ “Ideal L2 Self” (the person they aspire to become) and their “Current L2 Self” (their present self-concept), as learners are driven to reduce this gap.
My research focuses on understanding the diverse ways in which learners conceptualize their selves and on clarifying the structure and relationships among these self-representations. In particular, I am interested in how the magnitude of self-discrepancy should be conceptualized and at what level it most effectively enhances motivation. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to the development of tailored approaches that support English learning motivation based on individual learner characteristics.
